Luminis IV and uPortal

December 6, 2006

We’ll be upgrading to Luminis IV as soon as possible. I’m looking forward to the improvements in the user interface. We’re getting a glimpse of some of the possibilities by reviewing the online tour based on uPortal 2.3.3 put together by Virginia Tech .

Portal, uPortal, Luminis

My colleague, Casey Bisson received a Mellon award for his efforts on WPopac. I have been watching Casey’s interest and efforts in this area for several years. It’s a great idea and a great effort. Congratulations Casey! You can hear more about Casey’s effort first hand at NHPR.

In 2005 we launched an Alumni role in our portal called myPlymouth, which is based on Luminis portal technology from SunGardHE, in an effort extend communication and engagement opportunities with our Alumni. We have found that those alumni who are most likely to engage us through the portal are students who experienced the portal as undergraduates. We’ve had a portal since roughly 2000. While it is not exactly a big surprise that students who use the portal turn into alums who use the portal it is significant when you consider that the 1-15 year post graduation date alumni are the most difficult to engage. It strongly supports the business case for those considering developing an Alumni portal.

University Business included on our portal efforts in their December 2006 article, “Engaging Alumni Online.”
