[...] My colleague, Ken Kochien, has been blogging about the impact of web services on the slow to change behemoth of higher education. While he was talking specifically about the integrated suite of apps we presently utilize such as our Student Information System (SIS), Learning Management System, portal solution, email solutions, he wondered about the potential impact of new web services such as Microsoft’s Live.
And Google is upping the ante with their new suite offering rivaling Microsoft's Live. Their suite contains their current apps: Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar and Google Page Creator. Like MS, they offer a tiered service structure for businesses and have a specific like for higher education.

Check it out at: http://www.google.com/a/edu/

Is the current model we employ facing extinction? How many email accounts does anyone really need? How many different online identities? Should higher ed still foot the bill for services that fewer students might be taking advantage of?

Good questions with no easy answers...
